Instituted – The Feet Washing

John 13:1, 4-5  “Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father,…  He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.  After that he poureth water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

John 13:14-15  “If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.  For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.”

Instituted – The Supper

Matt 26:26-30  “And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.  And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, drink ye all of it; the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.  But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.  And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.

GC 399  “On the fourteenth day of the first Jewish month, the very day and month on which for fifteen long centuries the Passover lamb had been slain, Christ, having eaten the Passover with his disciples, instituted that feast which was to commemorate His own death as `the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.’  That some night He was taken by wicked hands to be crucified and slain.”

Jesus Our Sacrifice – Soon to be Taken

Judgment Hall Scenario – Night of the Passover

John 18:28  “Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of Judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.”

DA 723 “After condemning Jesus, the council of the Sanhedrin had come to Pilate to have the sentence confirmed and executed.  But these Jewish officials would not enter the Roman judgment hall.  According to their ceremonial law they would be defiled thereby, and thus prevented from taking part in the feast of the Passover.  In their blindness they did not see that murderous hatred had defiled their hearts.  They did not see that Christ was the real Passover lamb, and that, since they had rejected Him, the great feast had for them lost its significance.”

John 18:39  “But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?”

Christ’s Death & Resurrection

1Cor 15:4  “And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”

DA 388-389 “The Jews were about to celebrate the Passover at Jerusalem, in commemoration of the night of Israel’s deliverance, when the destroying angel smote the homes of Egypt.  In the paschal lamb God desired them to behold the Lamb of God, and through the symbol receive Him who gave Himself for the life of the world.  But the Jews had come to make the symbol all-important, while its significance was unnoticed.  They discerned not the Lord’s body.  The same truth that was symbolized in the paschal service was taught in the words of Christ.  But it was still undiscerned.

  “Now the rabbis exclaimed angrily, “How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?”  They affected to understand His words in the same literal sense as did Nicodemus when he asked, “How can a man be born when he is old?” John 3:4.  To some extent they comprehended the meaning of Jesus, but they were not willing to acknowledge it.  By misconstruing His words, they hoped to prejudice the people against Him.

  “Christ did not soften down His symbolical representation.  He reiterated the truth in yet stronger language: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink His blood, ye have no life in you.  Whoso eateth My flesh, and drinketh My blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.  For My flesh is meat indeed, and My blood is drink indeed.  He that eateth My flesh, and drinketh My blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.””

DA 389 “But even these figures fail to present the privilege of the believer’s relation to Christ.  Jesus said, “As the living Father hath sent Me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by Me.”  As the Son of God lived by faith in the Father, so are we to live by faith in Christ.  So fully was Jesus surrendered to the will of God that the Father alone appeared in His life.  Although tempted in all points like as we are, He stood before the world untainted by the evil that surrounded Him.  Thus we also are to overcome as Christ overcame.”

Crucifixion – 1st Day – Preparation Day

Luke 23:44  “And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.”

Matt 27:46  “And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me?”  (also Mark 15:34)

Matt 27:50-51  “Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.  And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;”  (also Mark 15:37-38,  Luke 23:46)

John 19:30-31  “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished; and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.  The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross in the sabbath day (for that sabbath day was an high day,)…”

DA 757  “The priest is about to slay the victim; but the knife drops from his nerveless hand, and the lamb escapes.  Type has met antitype in the death of God’s Son.  The great sacrifice has been made..  The way into the holiest is laid open.  A new and living way is prepared for all.  No longer need sinful, sorrowing humanity await the coming of the high priest.  Henceforth the Saviour was to officiate as priest and advocate in the heaven of heavens.  It was as if a living voice had spoken to the worshipers: There is now an end to all sacrifices and offerings for sin.”

Burial

Luke 23:50-56  “(of Joseph of Aramathaea)  This man went unto Pilot, and begged the body of Jesus.  And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.  And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.  And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.  And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.”  (also Matt 27:57)

John 19:42  “There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.”

Christ Rested – 2nd Day – the Sabbath Day

Matt 27:62-64  “Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilot, Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.  Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night,… Pilot said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.”

Resurrection – 3rd Day – the 1st Day of the Week

Matt 28:1-2  “In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.  And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.”

Luke 24:1-2  “Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.  And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.”  (also Mark 16:1-2;  John 20:1)

Christ Our Passover Memorial

1Cor. 5:7-8  “…For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven,…but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.”

Why Lord’s Supper to be Observed more often then Passover

1 Cor 11:26  “For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord’s death till he come.”

1T 203:1-2 “Here our Saviour instituted the Lord’s supper, to be often celebrated, to keep fresh in the memory of his followers the solemn scenes of his betrayal and crucifixion for the sins of the world.  He would have his followers realize their continual dependence upon his blood for salvation.  The broken bread was a symbol of Christ’s broken body, given for the salvation of the world.  The wine was a symbol of his blood, shed for the cleansing of the sins of all those who should come unto him for pardon, and receive him as their Saviour.

  “The salvation of men depends upon a continual application to their hearts of the cleansing blood of Christ.  Therefore, the Lord’s Supper was not to be observed only occasionally or yearly, but more frequently than the annual passover.  The solemn ordinance commemorates a far greater event than the deliverance of the children of Israel from Egypt.  The deliverance was typical of the great atonement which Christ made by the sacrifice of his own life for the final deliverance of his people.”

EGW faced yearly celebration problem

2SG 97-99 “Our first conference was at Volney in Bro Arnold’s barn.  There were about thirty-five present, all that could be collected in that part of the state.  There were hardly two agreed.  Each was strenuous for his views, declaring that they were according to the Bible.  All were anxious for an opportunity to advance their sentiments, or to preach to us.  They were told that we had not come so great a distance to hear them, but had come to teach them the truth.  Bro Arnold held that the 1000 years of Rev. were in the past; and that the 144,000 were those raised at Christ’s resurrection.  And as we had the emblem of our dying Lord before us, and was about to commemorate his sufferings, Bro A arose and said he had no faith in what we were about to do; that the Sacrament was a continuation of the Passover, to be observed but once a year.

  “These strange differences of opinion rolled a heavy weight upon me, especially as Bro A spoke of the 1000 years being in the past.  I knew that he was in error, and great grief pressed my spirits; for it seemed to me that God was dishonored.  I fainted under the burden.  Brethren Bates, Chamberlain, Gurney, Edson, and my husband, prayed for me.  Some feared I was dying.  But the Lord heard the prayers of his servants, and I revived.  The light of Heaven rested upon me.  I was soon lost to earthly things.  My accompanying angel presented before me some of the errors of those present, and also the truth in contrast with their errors.  That these discordant views, which they claimed to be according to the Bible, were only according to their opinion of the Bible, and that their errors must be yielded, and they unite upon the third angel’s message.  Our meeting ended victoriously.  Truth gained the victory.”

Another application of Passover Today

R&H May 21, 1895 “The directions that Moses gave concerning the passover feast are full of significance, and have an application to parents and children in this age of the world. …

  “The father was to act as the priest of the household, and if the father was dead, the eldest son living was to perform this solemn act of sprinkling the door-post with blood.  This is a symbol of the work to be done in every family.  Parents are to gather their children into the home and to present Christ before them as their Passover.  The father is to dedicate every inmate of his home to God, and to do a work that is represented by the feast of the passover.  It is perilous to leave this solemn duty in the hands of others.

  “Are parents placing the mark of God upon their households in this their day of probation and privilege?  Are not many fathers and mothers placing their responsibilities into others’ hands?  Do not many of them think that the minister should take the burden, and see to it that their children are converted, and that the seal of God is placed upon them?  They do not restrict their children’s desires, referring them to a `thus saith the Lord.’  Many suppose that the Sabbath-school influence will be all-sufficient, and that the Sabbath-school teacher will instruct and educate their children in such a way as to lead them to Christ.  Fathers and mothers place their responsibility in the hands of others, and thus perilously neglect their own households. …”

Personal commitment is the greatest testimony.  Our children will have no excuse, for they cannot point their finger at their parents or teachers.  Christ must be our personal passover, or our children will not recognize Him as their personal passover.

This is a daily duty to be accomplished for our families today.  It is not to be a yearly symbolic ceremony, but must be a reality to each one of us who are living in the present antitype of the feast.

Conclusion

DA 653 “The ordinance of the Lord’s Supper was given to commemorate the great deliverance wrought out as the result of the death of Christ.  Till He shall come the second time in power and glory, this ordinance is to be celebrated.  It is the means by which His great work for us is to be kept fresh in our minds.”

The Lord’s Supper

I Cor 11:23 “For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the [same] night in which he was betrayed took bread:”

Instituted Thursday evening, the night before Christ’s betrayal.

DA 652 “Christ was standing at the point of transition between two economies and their two great festivals. He, the spotless Lamb of God, was about to present Himself as a sin offering, that He would thus bring to an end the system of types and ceremonies that for four thousand years had pointed to His death. As He ate the Passover with His disciples, He instituted in its place the service that was to be the memorial of His great sacrifice. The national festival of the Jews was to pass away forever. The service which Christ established was to be observed by His followers in all lands and through all ages.

     “The Passover was ordained as a commemoration of the deliverance of Israel from Egyptian bondage. God had directed that, year by year, as the children should ask the meaning of this ordinance, the history should be repeated. Thus the wonderful deliverance was to be kept fresh in the minds of all. The ordinance of the Lord’s Supper was given to commemorate the great deliverance wrought out as the result of the death of Christ. Till He shall come the second time in power and glory, this ordinance is to be celebrated. It is the means by which His great work for us is to be kept fresh in our minds.”

Wine represents the blood of Christ.

I Cor 11:26 “For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.”

A reminder of Christ’s second coming.

DA 659 “The Communion service points to Christ’s second coming. It was designed to keep this hope vivid in the minds of the disciples. Whenever they met together to commemorate His death, they recounted how “He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; for this is My blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.” In their tribulation they found comfort in the hope of their Lord’s return. Unspeakably precious to them was the thought, “As often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord’s death till He come.” 1 Corinthians 11:26.”

I Cor. 11:27, 29 “Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink [this] cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.” “For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.”

A sin to eat unworthily.

I Cor 11:29-30 “For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. For this cause many [are] weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.”

Sickness and death the result of not discerning the Lord’s body.

DA 660 “Our Lord has said, “Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink His blood, ye have no life in you. . . . For My flesh is meat indeed, and My blood is drink indeed.” John 6:53-55. This is true of our physical nature. To the death of Christ we owe even this earthly life. The bread we eat is the purchase of His broken body. The water we drink is bought by His spilled blood. Never one, saint or sinner, eats his daily food, but he is nourished by the body and the blood of Christ. The cross of Calvary is stamped on every loaf. It is reflected in every water spring. All this Christ has taught in appointing the emblems of His great sacrifice. The light shining from that Communion service in the upper chamber makes sacred the provisions for our daily life. The family board becomes as the table of the Lord, and every meal a sacrament.

     “And how much more are Christ’s words true of our spiritual nature. He declares, “Whoso eateth My flesh, and drinketh My blood, hath eternal life.” It is by receiving the life for us poured out on Calvary’s cross, that we can live the life of holiness. And this life we receive by receiving His word, by doing those things which He has commanded. Thus we become one with Him.”

I Cor 11:28 “But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of [that] bread, and drink of [that] cup.”

All should examine themselves.

DA 656 “Christ’s example forbids exclusiveness at the Lord’s Supper. It is true that open sin excludes the guilty. This the Holy Spirit plainly teaches. 1 Corinthians 5:11.  But beyond this none are to pass judgment. God has not left it with men to say who shall present themselves on these occasions. For who can read the heart? Who can distinguish the tares from the wheat? “Let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.” For “whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.” “He that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.” 1 Corinthians 11:28, 27, 29.”

Matt 26:20-28 “Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve. And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I? And he answered and said, He that dippeth [his] hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.  The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born. Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said. And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed [it], and brake [it], and gave [it] to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave [it] to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”

Not criticize others, but say, “Lord, is  it I?”

Matt 26:29 “But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

The Saviour is refraining from drinking the fruit of the vine until all get home in the kingdom.

Acts 2:46 “And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,”

Bread broken daily in the early church.

Acts 20:7-11 “And upon the first [day] of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight. And there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered together. And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead. And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing [him] said, Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him. When he therefore was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and talked a long while, even till break of day, so he departed.”

Paul broke bread between midnight and daybreak.

The ordinance is very sacred but can be celebrated at any time.

CHRISTIAN COMMUNION

1.  WHAT was connected with the worship of God before the first advent?

“Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary.” Heb 9:1.

NOTE.—Paul says that these ordinances consisted “in meats and drinks, and divers washings,” imposed “until the time of reformation,” and that they were “a shadow of good things to come.” Heb 9:10; 10:1.

2.  To whom did the sacrificial offerings point forward?

“And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given Himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savor.” Eph 5:2.

NOTE.—Through the provisions of the sacrificial law, the repentant sinner showed his faith in the coming Redeemer, who was to shed His blood for the sins of mankind.  These sacrificial offerings were ordinances which pointed forward to the work of Christ, which they typified.  Since the crucifixion, the ordinances of the Christian church point backward, and are designed to show faith in the work of Christ already accomplished.

3.  What does the Lord desire us to keep in mind?

“By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you. … how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures; and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.” 1 Cor 15:2-4.

4.  What ordinance commemorates Christ’s burial and resurrection?

“Buried with Him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with Him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised Him from the dead.” Col 2:12.

5.  For what purpose was the Lord’s Supper instituted?

“The Lord Jesus the same night in which He was betrayed took bread: and when He had given thanks, He brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is My body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of Me.” 1 Cor 11:23, 24.

6.  What is signified by the wine?

“In like manner also the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in My blood: this do, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 1 Cor 11:25, R.V.

7.  What do both the bread and the wine commemorate?

“For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord’s death till He come.” 1 Cor 11:26.

8.  What caution is given concerning engaging in this ordinance unworthily?

“Whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. … He that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.” 1 Cor 11:27-29.

NOTE.—The last expression shows what is meant by eating and drinking unworthily.  It is not the one who has a deep sense of his sinfullness and of his unworthiness of God’s mercy and grace, but he who does not discern that Christ died for his sins—who is not penitent—that eats and drinks unworthily.

9.  What preparation should be made for this service?

“Let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.” 1 Cor 11:28.

10.  What is essential to Christian fellowship and cleansing from sin?

“If we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin.” 1 John 1:7.

11.  What still higher fellowship does the Christian enjoy?

“And truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ.” 1 John 1:3.
